A leader in renewable energy in Brazil, ENGIE has invested more than R$ 100 million in the modernization of public lighting in Petrolina (PE) and Uberlândia (MG) since it assumed the concessions for these cities. In both muncipalities, the company has changed more than 120 thousand conventional light fixtures for LED technology, generating energy savings of more than 50%. In addition, the networks were extended with the incorporation of new lighting fixtures and improved quality of illumination.
In Uberlândia (MG), ENGIE took over the concession in 2020 and in the two years of the contract to date, investments have already surpassed R$ 82 million while the maintenance and operation of 86,458 lighting points has also been executed. More than 93.5 thousand separate interventions have been conducted including the replacement of light fixtures, in turn generating savings of 56% in the municipal electricity bill for public lighting.
ENGIE has also extended the municipal network, concluding 70 projects in the city's public squares, parks, streets and avenues. A further outstanding feature of the concession has been the activities of the operation, with a team of more than 50 working directly to maintain the service and the new installations with attendance time of less than 48 hours.
In parallel, in Petrolina (PE), ENGIE has invested more than R$ 32 million in the modernization of the public lighting of the city where it became the concessionaire last year. Resources have been made in the replacement of conventional lighting and in luminous flux improvements to the benefit of 350 thousand people.
Twelve months of work was involved in the replacement of more than 35 thousand lighting fixtures with LED technology, the installation of a telemanagement system covering the city's main avenues as well as the expansion of the network and illumination of monuments and tourist attractions. Despite the expansion, savings on the muncipal light bill amounted to more than 50%.
In 2022, ENGIE also undertook more than 7.6 thousand interventions in the local network with an average city-wide attendance time of less than 48 hours.
The Petrolina and Uberlândia PPP contracts run for a term of 20 years and are conditional on a series of reciprocal programs to be developed by the concessionaire, most notably the application of technolgies for upgrading energy efficiency.
"We want to work towards promoting the development of smarter, more humane, efficient and sustainable cities aligned to the Group's global strategy of being a leader in the energy transition to a low carbon economy. ENGIE's presence in the public lighting sector in Brazil reinforces the outstanding position of the company in the global context where it is already responsible for the operation and maintenance of more than 1.5 million lighting points", declares the Solutions for Cities director, Marcus Cunha.
New concession - ENGIE is also preparing to begin operations in the city of Curitiba following the ratification of its winning bid for the city's public lighting concession. The company won the auction for the concession of the Paraná state capital in September of this year, ENGIE proposing a monthly tariff of R$ 1.1 million and representing a discount of 71% relative to the maximum limit established in the bidding notice. The agreement will run for 23 years and provides for the operation, maintenance, and expansion of the city's current public lighting infrastructure of more than 160 thousand light fixtures. The investment involves the installation of an operational control center and the execution of a series of projects, particularly the illumination of the city's monuments. The new lighting will guarantee a reduction of at least 50% of the energy consumed in the public lighting of the muncipality.
