(Alliance News) - Donald Trump's return to the White House had an immediate impact on Mexico, with the peso plummeting to lows against the dollar.
As Il Sole 24 Ore points out Tuesday, if Trump implements tariffs on imports, Mexico, the main exporter to the U.S., will be the hardest hit.
Italy is not immune, as some 1,800 Italian companies operate in the country, with 300 factories producing for exports to the US.
Among the biggest investors are Ferrero, which produces Nutella and Kinder chocolate in Mexico; Pirelli & C. Spa, which has a plant serving both the local and U.S. markets; and Brembo Spa, which has doubled the capacity of its plant. Companies such as Eni Spa and Campari Spa, on the other hand, cannot move their operations because oil extraction and Tequila production are tied to Mexican territory.
Other Italian companies, such as Parmacotto and Barilla, could be impacted by the duties, but Barilla has plants in the U.S. that could mitigate the risks.
In general, Italian companies in Mexico face different challenges depending on their business strategy and presence in local and international markets.
