BERLIN (dpa-AFX) - The leader of the Green Party, Ricarda Lang, has praised the German government's power plant strategy as "groundbreaking". Lang said on Monday that the traffic light coalition was thus creating the technical prerequisites for the planned phase-out of coal-fired power generation by 2030. "The question of phasing out coal (...) will be decided with the entry into hydrogen and renewable energies."

After a long struggle, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Economics Minister Robert Habeck and Finance Minister Christian Lindner had agreed on a strategy for the construction of hydrogen-capable gas-fired power plants. Following the far-reaching switch to renewable energies, these should step in to cover the demand for electricity even when the wind is not blowing and the sun is not shining./ax/DP/jha
