The decision, welcomed on both sides of the Atlantic, comes after weeks of uncertainty. The project had been halted by the Department of the Interior, citing a lack of environmental analysis during its approval under Biden. An internal report had raised concerns about risks to marine wildlife.

However, between diplomatic pressure from Norway and the activism of Governor Hochul, the green light was finally given. Equinor, which was burning through $50m a week during the hiatus, can finally resume work.

Trump remains opposed to wind power, but the economic importance of the project ultimately won out. For industry, it's a victory: offshore wind still has a place in the US energy mix, even under a president who is hostile to the sector.
