Ericsson participates in the European Researchers' Night 2022 of Frascati Scienza, this year's title being 'heaL thE plAnet's Future (LEAF)' 'Care for the future of the Planet'.

The initiative, promoted by the European Commission, involves thousands of researchers and institutions every year in different countries of the European Union, with the goal of creating meeting opportunities between researchers and citizens to spread scientific knowledge and culture.

Ericsson researchers have put together numerous activities for the event, aimed mainly at young students. On September 30th, Ericsson will open the doors of its Research & Development centers in Genoa, Pisa and Pagani, to middle and high schools students in the area. Through workshops, demonstrations and interactive sessions, it will be possible to discover how the networks of the present and the future - 5G and 6G - are born, and how they can contribute to generating a positive impact on the environment.

Also on September 30th, Ericsson will present its 'Digital Lab', an innovative training project for 12 to 18 years old's, aimed at developing the digital skills necessary to face the challenges of the future, including coding, robotics, and the principles of artificial intelligence.

Alessandro Pane, Director of Research and Development for Ericsson in Italy, says: 'We are pleased to open the doors of our Research and Development centers and tell from within the laboratories the work that Ericsson, for over forty years, has been doing to transform the fruit of research into concrete benefits for telephone operators, consumers and businesses. This event also gives us the opportunity to try to convey our passion for science to today's young people who will be tomorrow's researchers.'

Ericsson started carrying out R&D activities in Italy in 1978, and today, in the three centers of Genoa, Pisa and Pagani, it works not only on the development of 5G and its evolution, but also on projects related to key issues for the digital and ecological transition of the country, collaborating with the main mobile operators and enabling innovative solutions for smart manufacturing, transportation, e-health, cybersecurity and energy efficiency. The remarkable work carried out in Italy by Ericsson researchers is confirmed by the more than 800 patents made over the last 20 years.

In 2021, the Ericsson Group invested 18.1% of its annual global turnover in Research & Development, confirming its position as one of the main players in Europe. Ericsson has a total of 21 R&D centres in Europe and over 100 joint research and knowledge exchange collaborations with leading universities and academies.
