EssilorLuxottica SA said Monday that its chairman Leonardo Del Vecchio has died, confirming earlier media reports.

"The company expresses its deepest condolences to the family and to the global employee community for this enormous loss," the Franco-Italian eyewear group said. "The board will meet to determine next steps," it said.

Italian daily Corriere della Sera previously reported the death of Mr. Del Vecchio, who was 87, at a hospital in Milan.

Mr. Del Vecchio founded Italian optical firm Luxottica, which in 2018 merged with Essilor to create a giant of the eyecare business. He was also a shareholder in insurer Assicurazioni Generali SpA.
