City of Vantaa is planning a new tramway line to connect eastern Vantaa and Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. Planning the tramway line has been divided into two legs. AFRY will be involved in the eastern leg of the line together with its collaboration partners WSP Finland and Finnmap Infra. The assignment of the partners planning the eastern leg will cover street planning and preliminary construction engineering of the tramway line.

The new tramway connection enables development and growth of the eastern parts of the city, linking them more strongly to the network of urban centers in a sustainable and accessible way. The new line will be the first tramway line in Vantaa which so far has been dependent only on bus and commuter train connections. Located just north of Helsinki and being the fourth largest city in Finland with more than 230,000 inhabitants, Vantaa is an excellent location to develop sustainable public transport. The full length of the line will be about 19 kilometers.

AFRY, WSP Finland and Finnmap Infra have worked together before in various projects. Consequently, working methods and practices are familiar to each actor of the project. New digital tools and advanced data modeling in engineering enable fluent cooperation among partners.

AFRY brings to the assignment its strong experience in principle design as well as street and railway engineering from several modern railway and tramway projects. For example in Finland AFRY has been involved as a designer in Tampere Tramway and Kalasatama-Pasila Tramway in Helsinki.

'We are excited to use our strong tramway expertise to benefit the City of Vantaa, our hometown here in Finland. Participating Vantaa tramway project is strongly aligned with our strategic targets to build sustainably designed future cities. and In addition it is a natural continuation to the Ring Rail Line, AFRY's earlier delivered commuter train project in Vantaa,' comments Mikko Inkala, President of Transportation in Finland.

Investment decision for building the line is expected to be made in 2023 so that construction could begin in 2024 and the light rail would be in operation approximately in 2028 at the earliest.
