U.S. Mergers & Acquisitions Monthly Review: Nov. 2022 Companies and Markets

U.S. M&A deal activity decreased 10% in November, with 1,137 announcements compared to 1,264 in October. However, November aggregate M&A spending on deals increased 1.1% over October.

In terms of M&A deal activity over the past three months, no sector saw an increase in deals relative to the same three-month period one year ago. On the other hand, 20 of the 21 sectors tracked by FactSet saw a decrease in M&A deal activity over the past three months, relative to the same three-month period one year ago.

The five sectors that witnessed the largest declines in M&A deal volume (relative to the same three-month period one year ago) include:

• Finance (563 vs. 1249)

• Technology Services (726 vs. 1147)

• Producer Manufacturing (168 vs. 320)

• Commercial Services (531 vs. 653)

• Retail Trade (129 vs. 248)

Topping the list of the largest deals announced in November are:

• Johnson & Johnson entering an agreement to acquire ABIOMED, Inc. for $18.7 billion

• Village Practice Management Co. LLC's agreement to acquire Summit Health, Inc. for $7 billion

• Ritchie Bros Auctioneers, Inc.'s deal to acquire IAA, Inc. for $6.2 billion

• Chart Industries, Inc. agreeing to acquire Howden Group Ltd, a portfolio company of KPS Capital Partners LP, $4.4 billion

• Marathon Oil Corp.'s deal to acquire the Eagle Ford assets from Ensign Natural Resources LLC for $3 billion
