Tokyo, Mar 16 (EFE).- Two textile factories run by Japanese Fast Retailing in troubled Myanmar were damaged in a blaze over the weekend, a company spokesperson said on Tuesday, amid violent clashes between security forces and pro-democracy protesters following a military coup.

The factories of Uniqlo and GU brand stores were affected by the fire during anti-coup riots in several districts of Yangon, Myanmar's largest city.

But the extent of the damage was not known, the spokesperson said.

"I can confirm that two factories affected by the recent fire in Myanmar were used in manufacturing apparel for Fast Retailing. We do not have any more details at this time, but are trying to find out more," the spokesperson said.

China-linked factories in Yangon were also attacked Sunday, leaving many people injured, according to the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar.

The incident took place on Sunday, when the military rulers imposed martial law in four industrial districts of the densely populated Yangon, the former capital.

The imposition of the military laws gives extended powers to the army to curb dissent amid widespread protests for the restoration of democracy in the Southeast Asian nation.

The military junta has intensified repression against the pro-democracy demonstrators in which at least 183 civilians have been killed in the days of violent protests.

At least 94 civilians were shot dead in the last two days, advocacy group Association for the Assistance of Political Prisoners (AAPP) said on Tuesday.

The military has also destroyed and looted private properties, the group alleged, adding a total of 2,175 people have been arrested by the junta. EFE
