Tokyo stocks closed lower Friday as concerns grew over a resurgence in coronavirus infections in some European countries, although the losses were capped by strong gains for pricey Nikkei component Fast Retailing Co.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 96.60 points, or 0.41 percent, from Thursday at 23,410.63. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 14.10 points, or 0.86 percent, lower at 1,617.69.

Decliners were led by land transportation, mining and real estate issues.
