The effects of the magnitude-9 earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in 2011 are still felt around the world. Hundreds of volunteers recently removed more than 85,000 lbs. of plastic, tires, boating gear and other garbage from the shores of Vancouver Island. Much of the debris washed up in the period following the disaster in Japan.

The shoreline cleanup effort stretched nearly the entire west coast of Vancouver Island, making it the largest of its kind in Canadian history.

Hundreds of volunteers removed trash and loaded it onto a barge, where it was then shipped to Delta, British Columbia. From there, the debris was separated into reusables, recyclables and landfill categories and trucked off accordingly. The government of Japan donated $1 million to the project.

As part of the company's FedEx Cares campaign, FedEx volunteers teamed up with the Vancouver Island Marine Debris Working Group to contribute to the clean-up effort. FedEx Cares is the company's global giving platform through which FedEx will invest $200 million in more than 200 global communities by 2020 to create opportunities and deliver positive change around the world.
