Starting May 1, 2021 Fertoz is issuing carbon credit certificates with all rock phosphate sales outlining the calculated reductions in emissions and carbon sequestration potential from the application of rock phosphate. Carbon credit certificates are available to retailers, and producers (organic, conventional, transitional, regenerative) throughout Canada and the USA.

For the purchase and application of 20 tonnes of rock phosphate which converts into

55 tonnes of CO2 (55 carbon credits)

and for implementing sustainable agricultural management practices.

Reduce Manufacturing Emissions

Processing of rock phosphate releases ~0.2 tonnes CO2/tonne product. Conventional P releases ~1.3 tonnes CO2/tonne product. For every tonne of conventional P replaced by rock phosphate, a reduction of 1 tonne of carbon emissions is expected.

Carbon Sequestration

High carbon sequestration potential assumes good soil management practices such as crop rotation, good nutrient amendments, and conservation tillage. Significant amounts of carbon are sequestered in the plant's root and shoot biomass, contributing to carbon build up in the soil. We estimate carbon sequestration based on CO2 accumulation in the plant and average yield gains from rock phosphate application.

Potential Gains from Yield

Cereals can sequester on average ~1.6 tonnes CO2/ac. Grasses, legumes, and rapeseeds can sequester ~2.8, 0.8, and 0.7 tonnes CO2/ac respectively. At an application rate of 300 lbs/ac, 20 tonnes covers ~146 acres. On average, rock phosphate increases yield by 15%. In cereals for example, an increase in yield of 15% offers a 0.24 tonnes CO2/ac sequestration potential. Over 146 acres, an estimated 35 tonnes CO2/ac sequestration potential is possible in cereal plants. In grasses, legumes and oilseeds; sequestration potentials of 61 tonnes CO2/ac, 18 tonnes CO2/ac, and 15 tonnes CO2/ac respectively are possible.

Actual Carbon Sequestered

Third party testing specialists and agronomists have verified through soil testing and aerial imagery the adjusted amount of carbon sequestered after the application of rock phosphate.

Carbon Trading

Regulations are quickly emerging on lowering carbon emissions and increasing carbon sequestration. Keep this certificate for future carbon trading potential.
