Just over a year after the inauguration, the FLSmidth Digital Collaboration Center has become a key pillar that is committed to delivering solutions that enable customers to optimize factory performance even during the pandemic.

One of the conclusions that were most realized, one year after the COVID-19 pandemic that affects the world, is that the new scenario abruptly accelerated the process of digital transformation that had been taking place in the sector in general, modifying planning and generating new challenges to meet business goals.

One of these first new challenges was to continue operations and prioritize the health and safety of all people at all times. It was in this context, with travel restrictions that field services began to hinder mining, that flsmidth's Digital Collaboration Center (CCD) operations began, a space in which the global experience is integrated and collaborative. The specialized knowledge of our customers' processes and assets, tools and technologies allow us to optimize the performance of operations.

COVID's challenge and a solution that was in the clouds

When the CDC started working, the world began the quarantine process. The spread of Coronavirus has forced mining operations to implement demanding health protocols to protect workers' health. These protocols included severe restrictions on entry to the sites. On the other hand, supplier companies have also increased day-to-day travel restrictions to protect employees. But the challenge also involved operational continuity.

Hernan Muniz, flsmidth's digital product line manager and ccd executive, said: 'While all of this presents an unusual scenario, FLSmidth's digital transformation process and the architecture of our solutions have always been thought of and developed in a remote reality. True, the CCD is physically located in Santiago, but in reality it is not: it is in the cloud.'

Thus, each CCD employee, working remotely from their homes, had access to all digital tools and information, which allowed them to continue operating and collaborating with the productivity of our clients' operations. 'This is really an added value, because CCD facilitates, through digital tools, the integration of the different areas that provide services and support to customers. Not only do we help employees overcome the challenge of continuing the operation, but we continue to offer solutions to improve productivity and optimize performance,' said Leonardo Salgado, FLSmidth's vice president of order processing and execution.

The CCD is a facilitator for the integration of solutions and benefits

According to a study conducted this year by the World Economic Forum and Accenture, 38% of mining operations in Chile currently have a remote or developing center to generate an integrated operating space that allows comprehensive decision-making. And that's exactly what FLSmidth anticipated years ago, when it began the digital transformation process, which includes the development of remote collaboration centers.

According to the same study, if this modality of remote operation is adopted by 50% of the world's mining by 2025, the investment should be around US$ 65 billion for the sector. According to Claudio Garcia, president of FLSmidth of Amarica do Sul, this confirms our vision as a company and confirms us once again as pioneers and industry leaders. For years we have developed information technologies that allow us to keep equipment running optimally. But what we do remotely today in ccd allows our customers to get the most out of it for as long as possible, maximizing productivity and reducing resource use and environmental impact.'

The CCD brings several potentiated benefits. It facilitates increased profitability by assisting in detecting production losses and allows you to make recommendations and implementations to increase process availability and stability. It presents environmental benefits because it generates useful information to adjust customers' processes and equipment, allowing them to achieve greater efficiency in resource utilization and emission reduction.

During the first year of operation, the CCD monitored and assisted more than 15 operations in South America, including several of the most important mineral processing plants in Chile, Peru and Brazil. 'When we realize that we are able to process more than 200 different operational and reliability variables per second in each plant, we know that we can add real value to our customers because this information allows us to deliver comprehensive and complete solutions that will improve productivity and reduce environmental impact,' Garcia added.

FLSmidth provides sustainable productivity to the global mining and cement industries. We deliver market-leading engineering, equipment and service solutions that enable our customers to improve performance, drive down costs and reduce environmental impact. Our operations span the globe and we are close to 10,200 employees, present in more than 60 countries. In 2020, FLSmidth generated revenue of DKK 16.4 billion. MissionZero is our sustainability ambition towards zero emissions in mining and cement by 2030.
