Today, 27 January, 2022, the Swedish Government has given green light to move forward with spent nuclear fuel repository and an encapsulation plant in Sweden.

The process started already in March 2011, when Radioactive waste management company Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB (SKB) submitted its applications to build Sweden's first nuclear fuel repository and an encapsulation plant to the Radiation Safety Authority (SSM). During autumn of 2021 the Government decision on the capacity extension of the existing Clab interim storage facility, one part of the application, was taken. With today's decision the process can now move forward and throughout the process research and development continues.

"It is a most welcomed decision from the Government and it will enable us as co-owner to take responsibility for the spent fuel. The Finnish repository, based on the method developed by SKB, will be ready in only a couple of years. I believe that the experiences from that project will also be beneficial for the Swedish project", says Simon-Erik Ollus, Executive Vice President, Generation at Fortum.
