The airport operator Fraport recorded around 61.6 million passengers in 2024, an increase of 3.7 percent over the previous year, as the group announced on Thursday. However, this was still 12.7 percent less than in 2019, the year before travel was restricted by the coronavirus pandemic.
In the medium-haul segment, destinations such as Greece, Spain, Portugal and Italy were particularly in demand last year. In the long-haul segment, North America remained popular, but interest in the Far East and South America also increased. Cargo volume rose by 6.2 percent to 2.1 million tons.
In December, however, the number of passengers at Frankfurt Airport fell by 1.1 percent to 4.5 million. The cargo volume fell by 1.2 percent. Fraport CEO Stefan Schulte criticized the "very high state-regulated location costs." "Airlines invest where they have to pay fewer fees to the state. We are also feeling this here in Frankfurt." Across the entire Group, the number of passengers at the airports actively managed by Fraport rose by 3.7 percent to 174.5 million in 2024.
