ANCHORAGE, Alaska- The Unalaskans Against Sexual Assault & Family Violence Shelter is a safe space for the women and children of the Unalaska/Dutch Harbor community. To support the shelter and the people it serves, GCI recently announced a $5,000 donation through its charitable arm, GCI Gives.

The facility in Unalaska supports survivors impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault and other crimes. In addition to offering safe shelter, USAFV provides crisis intervention, safety planning, legal advocacy, referrals, emergency food assistance, as well as education and outreach.

'GCI Gives was created out of our commitment to backing organizations making a difference in the lives of Alaskans,' said Jenifer Nelson, GCI's Senior Manager of Community Engagement. 'We're proud to have the opportunity to support small nonprofits like USAFV. Our hope is more survivors can be housed safely and supported through their healing journey.'

Over the last five years, GCI has donated over $10 million dollars to organizations across the state. This encompasses $2 million in cash, products, scholarships and grants each year. Mental health and suicide prevention are at the top of GCI's list.

'At the core of our business, supporting Alaskans is what we're all about,' said Nelson. 'Whether that be through connectivity, or supporting local nonprofits, we're committed to our neighbors.'

GCI recently announced a $58 million project to bring high-speed broadband service to Unalaska/Dutch Harbor, King Cove, Sand Point, Akutan, Chignik Bay, and Larsen Bay.

GCI is one of Alaska's leaders in corporate philanthropy, donating approximately $2 million each year in cash, products and connectivity to organizations across the state. GCI is committed to giving back to the communities it serves and provides employees with 16 hours of paid leave to volunteer with local organizations. In 2019, nearly 550 GCI employees volunteered more than 5,300 hours.
