GE Vernova: order from SMS group for Oxelösund steel mill

GE Vernova announces that it has won an order from SMS group to supply a direct power system based on a modular multilevel converter (MMC) for SSAB's 280 MVA electric arc furnace (EAF), planned for the new steelworks in Oxelösund (Sweden).

The order, booked in June 2024, supports SSAB's goal of producing steel without fossil fuels by 2030.

The system, designed to reduce maintenance costs and improve efficiency, should help reduce CO2 emissions from 2.32 to 0.67 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of steel produced.

Delivery is scheduled for early 2026, with first start-up in the fourth quarter of 2026.
