General Dynamics recorded a jump in earnings and revenue in the third quarter as demand remained strong for its Gulfstream aircraft and defense unit's combat systems.
The aerospace and defense company posted net earnings of $930 million, or $3.35 a share, up from $836 million, or $3.04 in the same quarter last year. Analysts polled by FactSet had expected $3.48 a share.
Revenue rose 10% to $11.67 billion, clearing analyst forecasts for $11.65 billion, according to FactSet.
The Reston, Va., company's total estimated contract value was $137.6 billion, including a backlog sum of $92.6 billion.
Chief Executive Phebe Novakovic said demand across the company's portfolio remains strong. The Gulfstream Aerospace subsidiary delivered 28 aircraft during the quarter--one more than in the year-earlier quarter--including 24 large-cabin aircraft.
The company's defense segment, including the combat-systems division which makes battle tanks and other land-defense machines, landed significant awards. These include $885 million for various munitions and ordnance and $465 million for two U.S. Army contracts that called for the production of 155-millimeter artillery projectile metal parts.
