General Electric Co.'s aviation unit said its has received regulatory certification for its GE9X engine, which would power the new twin-engine Boeing 777X family.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration's certification involved eight test engines. The test engines completed just under 5,000 hours and 8,000 cycles for the certification, GE Aviation said Monday.

GE Aviation said the test engine has 10% lower specific fuel consumption than the GE90-115B. It said the engine will generate low smog-causing emissions.

The company is working with Boeing Co. to complete the 777X flight test program and entry into service, it said.
