Buenos Aires, Argentina -- GE (NYSE: GE) and YPF Luz, the power generation subsidiary of Argentina's largest energy company YPF, today announced that La Plata Cogeneration II combined heat and power (CHP) plant achieved the start of commercial operation, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Powered by GE's 6F gas turbine technology, the new cogeneration plant is expected to add approximately 90 megawatts (MW) to the existing 128 MW powering La Plata Industrial Complex (CILP), and it's expected to become the cogeneration complex with the highest capacity output in Argentina. La Plata Cogeneration II is in the city of Ensenada, Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

In 2017, YPF Luz selected A-Evangelista (AESA), YPF's construction and engineering unit to build La Plata Cogeneration II plant, adjacent to the existing 128 MW La Plata Cogeneración I site. One year later, engineers from GE and FieldCore, GE's owned field services company, started to work in tandem to install and commission the GE equipment. As the COVID-19 pandemic spread, GE and FieldCore implemented additional safety measures including more frequent disinfections at the site, physical distancing, and the use of personal protective equipment such as masks and gloves to ensure the safe completion of the project.

La Plata Cogeneración II deploys a GE's 6F.03 gas turbine, Mark VIeS Safety Integrity Level (SIL) controllers, a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) with supplemental firing and a A34 generator. GE's 6F.03 gas turbine is equipped with cutting-edge Dry Low NOx (DLN) 2.6+ combustion system to considerably reduce the NOx, SOX and particulate emissions, as well as upgraded Advanced Gas Path (AGP) turbine module components for increased output and efficiency-making it the most advance 6F in the GE fleet.

Cogeneration, or Combined Heat and Power (CHP) is a highly efficient process that generates electricity and captures the steam generated in the HRSG to provide useful thermal energy that can be used for space heating, cooling, domestic hot water and for industrial processes, without additional fuel consumption. The cogeneration system at La Plata Cogeneration, powered by a single 6F.03 gas turbine, is a great fit for this application by delivering up to 600 GJ/hr steam for export.

"GE Gas Power is uniquely positioned to provide YPF Luz with the advanced technology solutions to safely deliver the needed heat and power, while reducing both water consumption and emissions, for YPF´s industrial process" said Eric Gray, Vice President for Americas region, GE Gas Power "We are proud GE's technology at the La Plata Cogeneración II plant will allow YPF Luz to meet its goals of an efficient and sustainable energy future. This project illustrates our commitment to work with our customers to develop tailored solutions that help refinery operators around the world meet their operational, and environmental requirement."

With GE Gas Power's F-class power plants in service in more than 60 countries worldwide, its gas technology applications include power generation, combined heat and power, and mechanical drive applications across multiple diverse industries, such as, aluminum smelting, refineries, and food processing. GE Gas Power introduced the F-class power plant to the industry nearly 35 years ago, and since then more than 1,500 installed F-class machines have operated for more than 54 million hours with industry-leading reliability. The 6F.03 was built for harsh and remote environments and over 140 units are currently in use worldwide.
