GIKEN LTD. (Head Office: Kochi City, President: Shinnosuke Moribe) has joined the Disaster Prevention Consortium (CORE), a group of companies and organizations from a wide variety of industries working together to build a resilient society that can withstand disasters, since April 20. The consortium's 44 member companies will combine their strengths to create new disaster prevention and mitigation initiatives and businesses in cooperation with the national and local governments. As a company that contributes to the protection and resilience of social infrastructure around the world with the ImplantTM Method at its core, we can demonstrate our presence that can propose optimal construction solutions for disaster restoration and recovery. Through partnerships with industries and business sectors with which we have had little linkage, we aim to develop new mechanisms and products to protect human lives, assets, and culture.

■The Disaster Prevention Consortium (CORE)

Against the backdrop of increasingly severe natural disasters, 14 corporations from various industries, including disaster prevention, insurance, AI, consulting, telecommunications, and electronics, started the organization in November last year. At present, 44 corporations, including our company, are participating in the consortium.

The consortium consists of a plenary session and subcommittees. The plenary session decides on management policies, disseminates knowledge and results, and cooperates with industry-academia-government collaboration. The subcommittees are opportunities for collaboration among corporations, where multiple corporations in partnership consolidate their know-how to form subcommittees on themes to be addressed, and realize the creation of new services and market development.

■Contribution of GIKEN Group

The subjects that we can contribute to the consortium are listed below. We have already started exchanging opinions and information with participating corporations and are preparing for the launch of subcommittees.

Proactive Disaster Prevention (Preventing Disasters from Recurring) and Early Disaster Recovery with "Implant Structure"

The Implant Method is a construction method to create implant structures that can withstand natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and floods by pressing factory-manufactured pile materials deep into the ground. This method enables rapid construction of "Implant Levees" that can withstand all kinds of collapse factors of river levees, and "Landslide Control Piles" and "Check Dams" to prevent landslide disasters. The "SILENT PILERTM" and system equipment can complete the entire press-in and extraction process on the piles, allowing for rapid construction in narrow or sloping areas without the necessity of temporary facilities.

Applying Underground Development Technologies

The "Implant Method" enables construction of underground spaces by high-precision press-in of pile materials to form cylindrical walls into the ground and excavation of the inside of the wall. For example, by building a highly efficient space directly under a designated evacuation site or office building, it can be used as a stockpile for disaster prevention supplies or as an underground shelter for evacuation in the event of a disaster. This cylindrical pile structure built with the "Implant Method" can also be used as a building foundation that is more quake-resistant than conventional foundation piles. This "anti-seismic versatile foundation" which not only supports the building but also has the function to utilize its interior for various purposes, has been embodied in a building with an autmated parking facility "Eco ParkTM" and "Eco CycleTM" as those foundations, and it is expected to be applied in a wide variety of ways in the future.

Applying Monitoring Technologies

By placing sensors in piles or in the ground with the "Implant Method", the soundness of the structure can be monitored based on the measurement data. Data can be constantly monitored via remote communication. The evaluation of the condition of the piles and ground can be used to estimate the risk of damage and to provide evacuation information. The "Implant Levee" on the Kochi Coast (Nino construction area) has been constantly monitoring the soundness of the levee using measuring equipment inside the levee since 2013.

■Profile of GIKEN Group
GIKEN developed the SILENT PILER, the world's first reaction-based hydraulic pile jacking machine, installing piles with no noise and vibration. GIKEN Group now actively promotes the Press-in Technology worldwide and contributes to the construction industry by proposing and implementing innovative solutions. The innovative technology of press-in provides a unique solution and the adoption of this technology has grown to more than 40 nations and regions.
