Gilead Sciences Inc. on Friday said it named Flavius Martin as executive vice president of research, effective April 12.

Mr. Martin succeeds Bill Lee, who is retiring after 30 years with the Foster City, Calif., biopharmaceutical company.

Gilead said Mr. Martin, who will become a member of its senior leadership team and will have responsibility for its research organization, joins from Amgen Inc., where he most recently served as vice president of research biology, leading discovery for oncology, inflammation and cardiometabolic research.

Mr. Lee, who joined Gilead in 1991, has been executive vice president of research since 2015.
