Gold Fields Ltd. said Tuesday that Chief Executive Officer Chris Griffith will step down at the end of the year and named Martin Preece, executive vice president of Gold Fields South Africa, as interim CEO.

The gold miner said that Mr. Griffith will step down effective from Dec. 31, with Mr. Preece joining the board from Jan. 1.

Mr. Preece has spent 37 years in the industry and joined Gold Fields almost six years ago. The two will work together to ensure a smooth handover and the board has initiated the process to appoint a new chief executive.

"[Mr. Preece] knows the company well, having led the turnaround of South Deep, and is well-placed to lead Gold Fields and its leadership team. The board fully supports him as interim CEO," the company said.

The company also said it was performing well, delivering strong returns and will continue to deliver on its strategy, including growing the value and quality of its portfolio.
