After four years of on-the-job training and accompanying study, Robert Roberts is now a member of Gold Fields' St Ives Maintenance crew.

Being born in Kalgoorlie and now aged 19, Mr Roberts was interested in career opportunities that kept him close to home.

'When I realised I could have a full and rewarding career in the mining industry just 40 minutes from where I live, I applied for the opportunity and haven't looked back', said Mr Roberts after qualifying with a Certificate III in Engineering (Mechanical) late last year.

'The best part about working for Gold Fields' St Ives Gold Mine has been the experience as a whole, from working at machinery manufacturers and component specialists, to developing bonds and relationships with co-workers,' said Mr Roberts.

Executive Vice President Australasia Stuart Mathews congratulated Mr Roberts on his graduation.

'Identifying, training and keeping young, local talent is a really important part of what we do at Gold Fields and Rob's results are a testament to his hard work and our experienced team at St Ives.

Gold Fields' 2023 Apprentice Programme is now open for candidates and Mr Mathews is calling on Kambalda and Kalgoorlie residents to look into the benefits and reasonable rosters being offered at St Ives.

'We're really fortunate to now be in the market looking for our next cohort of potential apprentices and excited to offer both training and career pathway for locals,' said Mr Mathews.

Mr Roberts has just returned from annual leave to his new roster as a fully qualified Mobile Technician.

'I'm excited about my role at St Ives as a qualified trade as I'm now on a good roster with good salary, working within a good team for a great company,' said Mr Roberts.

'I would encourage anyone interested in a fulfilling and rewarding career that keeps them in the Goldfields region. The company has three other mines in the region and lots of opportunities for a stable and rewarding career in mining maintenance,' he said.

The programme is four years in duration that provides a Certificate III and includes TAFE theory blocks. Gold Fields' St Ives mine is looking for candidates interested in qualifications in electrical, auto electrical, boiler making, fixed plant mechanical and mobile mechanical.

Candidates must reside in Kambalda or Kalgoorlie.

Interested candidates have until Monday 16th January to apply online through the Gold Fields' Career website (Search for 'Gold Fields Careers' or visit www.careers.goldfields.com).
