When we think of the Big 5, we think of five majestic animals - lion, rhino, buffalo, leopard and elephant. The Big 5 also lend their names to five key operational projects launched at our South Deep mine in South Africa, which will bring the mine closer to further productivity improvements and cost savings.

These projects were identified in response to some of the most pressing challenges at South Deep and will be delivered by five project teams. Each team attended a series of workshops that assisted them in understanding the root causes of the challenges and to identify sustainable solutions. Teams now have a fixed timeframe in which to implement their solutions.

Team Buffalo will focus on increasing the gold recovered from the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF)
from 40% to 46%. The business benefit of this project is increase revenue for South Deep,
as well as reduced costs by developing innovative solutions in the gold plant.

Team Rhino aims to reduce hydraulic oil consumption by minimising hydraulic oil leaks on trackless mobile machinery. By doing so, the team could reduce costs, improve environmental compliance and improve the effectiveness of facetime.

Team Leopard is working to reduce the number of ventilation seal failures in the underground workplaces.
In doing so, the team intends to reduce costs, improve workplace temperatures and eliminate prolonged workplace stoppages.

Team Elephant is reducing oil contamination in the long hole stoping drill rigs. This will improve drill rig reliability, reduce maintenance costs, and enable increased long hole stoping production.

Team Lion has taken on the challenge of improving the way water is controlled in the underground workplaces.
This will reduce the number of flooded working places underground, thereby improving workplace conditions and production.

The projects are set to be completed in November 2021.
