MEET RAZAK

Abubakari Razak, Sectional Operator in the Metallurgical department at Tarkwa (Ghana), was recently recognised for taking the lead in safety to help us prevent a potentially serious incident.

THE SITUATION

Razak was assigned to use a 2-ton overhead crane for work in the gold room. While performing the required risk assessment, he noticed damage to the overhead crane rope. Following procedure, Razak considered the work equipment to be unsafe, and was courageous enough to stop the job to inform his supervisor, who ensured the site rigging team was dispatched for repairs.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Razak understood the danger of the situation and the risk of a serious, even fatal incident. "It is essential to stop and think through every task to ensure it is executed without HARM to myself, my colleagues, and the environment. Above all, we need to be VIGILANT and ALERT at every stage of a task," he says.

I want to encourage everybody to pay more attention to the pre-use inspections of tools, equipment and the working environment before performing a task - no matter how big or small. This will make ZERO HARM achievable.
