Segezha Group (MOEX: SGZH, a subsidiary of Sistema PJSFC) launched the final stage of its long-term environmental programme to overhaul soda recovery boilers and replace electrostatic precipitators at Segezha Pulp and Paper Mill. The total project cost is approximately RUB 2 billion.

The project has been in active development since 2017. In 5 years, the electrostatic precipitators were replaced on two (#4 and #2) out of three soda recovery boilers. Thus, in 2019, new equipment provided by French rolling stock manufacturer Alstom (Alstom Power Stavan JSC), one of the global leaders in the industry, was installed on the boiler #4. In 2021 the boiler #2 was equipped with a state-of-the-art filter, tailored specifically for this boiler by the Russian company Fingo-Complex, LTD (Semibratovsky Gas-cleaning Equipment Plant).

In February, according to schedule, Kondor-Eco JSC (Semibratovo) will complete the delivery of its equipment that will replace the last of the remaining old filters - on the boiler #3. The replacement will start in March. The commissioning is scheduled for early autumn.

The boiler #4 will also be overhauled this year. All works are expected to be completed by the end of 2022.

The environmental programme for the complete replacement of electrostatic precipitators and the repair of all the soda recovery boilers will significantly reduce the mill's environmental footprint. The company's new filters will provide almost absolute limestone particle entrapment, more than 99%.

'Segezha Group made substantial investments in the soda recovery boilers overhaul. The company systematically reduces the environmental footprint of its production facilities. In Karelia, the work is carried out primarily in the interests of Segezha residents, the team of our mill and the general environmental well-being of the region,' says Peter Podelenyuk, CEO of the Segezha Pulp and Paper Mill.

Before the Pulp and Paper Mill joined Segezha Group, no overhauls were performed on the soda recovery boilers. It should be noted that the boiler #2 had been in service since 1962, #3 - since 1964, and #4 - since 1970.
