Segezha Group (MOEX: SGZH, a subsidiary of Sistema PJSFC) is planning to construct its own treatment facilities at Sokol Pulp and Paper Mill in the Vologda Region. Investments in the project which includes the construction works are estimated at around RUB 2 billion. The biological treatment station has a capacity of 6.5 million m3 per year. The launch of the treatment facilities is scheduled for 2023.

At present, the mill's wastewater is routed to the city's wastewater treatment facilities. The construction of the additional wastewater treatment facilities is tied to the implementation of a large-scale investment project for constructing a new paper-making machine and boosting the production of technical lignosulfonates. As a result of the update, production capacity will increase by four times, fr om 20,000 to 80,000 tons per year. The amount of wastewater processed will increase respectively.

The new biological treatment station will provide filtering runoff of all existing and planned facilities. The Finnish company Econet, a world leader in the implementation of water supply and disposal projects, will handle the design and supply besides supervising the installation of the equipment.

'The company has chosen technology fr om Econet, as it has proved its efficiency at similar mills abroad. The system is highly automated and neutralizes all chemical contaminants. It will help to minimise the production facilities' impact on the environment, even if production rises considerably,' says Yuriy Yevstifeev, the head of the project for the construction of the new paper-making machine at Sokol Pulp and Paper Mill.

'Segezha Group is a forward-thinking corporate client with clear ESG goals. It is a large-scale project requiring a partner with extensive knowledge of the industry's harsh operating conditions, experience of work in harsh northern weather conditions, and a thorough understanding of the entire process. We are bringing decades of knowledge and experience in industrial wastewater treatment projects, in which we have achieved our ambitious goals,' comments on Mika Karkkainen, the Chairman of Econet Oy's Board and the Executive Director for projects in Russia.

For reference:

Segezha Group will invest about RUB 11 billion in the construction of the new paper-making machine at Sokol Pulp and Paper Mill. The German concern Bellmer will design and supply all the equipment. The new paper-making machine will quickly switch from the production of greaseproof paper to bag paper. This will allow the mill to quickly adjust production to consumer demand. The launch of the new paper-making machine is scheduled for 2023. Sokol Pulp and Paper Mill is the only Russian manufacturer of unbleached greaseproof paper. It is widely used in the food industry for packing, baking, and roasting goods.

Econet's wastewater treatment facilities comprise a complex process system based on the classic activated sludge technology. The wastewater enters the mechanical treatment unit (wh ere coarse particles are removed) and the preliminary settling tank unit for the primary sludge collection. After the neutralisation unit, the wastewater enters the centre of the plant - a system of aeration tanks and secondary settling tanks, wh ere the principle biological treatment of wastewater takes place with aeration and activated sludge. After that, the activated sludge is sent for dehydration. Tertiary post-treatment features a flotation unit for removing chemical contaminants. The parameters of the output water adhere to the required standards.
