Once again, and at a crucial moment for the protection of the environment we inhabit, FCC joins the celebration of World Environment Day of the United Nations (UN).

It is an unmissable day that takes place every June 5 since 1972 and that the company faces this year with a firm mission: to raise awareness about the necessary care of our habitats, motivating people to reconcile with nature, acquire the role of active agents of sustainable development and contribute to the restoration of ecosystems.

FCC has been developing various actions around this idea for years. The company has demonstrated its commitment by analyzing the environmental impact of biodiversity, carrying out initiatives such as collaboration with nature protection groups for the maintenance and control of biodiversity; the physical protection of specimens, transplants of plant species and transfer of animal species; or environmental awareness, among others.

In this sense, the protection of biodiversity is a priority for the company, since the practices and activities it carries out, as well as that carried out by the different business areas, try to mitigate and reduce any type of impact that may endanger its conservation. For this reason, the consequent use of natural resources for the implementation of all these activities has led the FCC Group to ensure at all times the care, preservation and repair of biodiversity.

Under this premise, and within the framework of its CSR Master Plan, FCC establishes alliances, develops ecosystem protection projects, executes mappings of areas of interest for biodiversity, in addition to collaborating with public entities to recover the population of certain endangered species, identify protected areas in operational perimeters, materialize environmental awareness campaigns , as well as innovative projects to maintain the balance between the urban environment and its cohabiting species.

Highlight the restoration project of the lagoons of El Porcal, which has been possible thanks to the collaboration of the Naumanni Naturalist Association, which has turned this place into an unbeatable place for fauna and flora, and with whom the Cementos Portland Valderrivas Group maintains an agreement to improve the restoration plans in one of the most emblematic places of the Southeast Regional Park , and in whom it has entrusted the care of the farm, ensuring that species such as the lavanco somormujo, the beetle-wasp, the pintojo toad or the otter, among others, find in El Porcal a place to stay, reproduce and enrich biodiversity in the Community of Madrid.

Also highlight the Chamaeleo project, funded entirely by FCC and selected within the framework of the Group's Corporate Social Responsibility Master Plan 2020, which has, among other purposes, support for the conservation of biodiversity in our ecosystems. The City Council of the Port of Santa Maria, in collaboration with the Municipal Center for Environmental Education and Activities in Nature (CEEAN) Coto de la Isleta, managed by FCC Medio Ambiente, is working on this initiative in order for this place to become a reference center for the study of the common chameleon and its protection through citizen awareness.

FCC works for global challenges

A series of events are setting the agendas of countries: the economic and social scenario drawn by the growth trends of the world's population, and the unequal concentration of wealth; the scarcity of natural resources to meet growing economies; The United Nations, in response to these global challenges, formulated and published in 2016, within its 2030 Agenda, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which group 169 concrete objectives, with which FCC has also aligned its corporate social responsibility commitments, so that countries, their citizens and companies have an effective guide for the minimization of social, economic and environmental problems, which have been identified globally.

We all have a fundamental role and an inescapable commitment to sustainability. Every gesture is important. At FCC, we are aware of this and join every effort through our commitment to the planet. Ecosystem restoration is necessary to reverse biodiversity loss, for green recovery, to mitigate the effects of climate change and to ensure livelihoods, food security, as well as physical and mental health. It's time for action and reaction. We all have a role to play.
