Harmony Gold Mining said it appointed Chief Operating Officer Beyers Nel as new chief executive, replacing Peter Steenkamp from Jan. 1.
Steenkamp, who has been at the helm of the South African gold miner for nine years, will retire at the end of December, the company said Thursday.
New CEO Nel has been with Harmony since 2003 and has held various positions, including as COO of South African operations. He was appointed group COO in January 2023.
The company also appointed Floyd Masemula, COO of South African operations, as deputy CEO due to the importance and the focus that is required for the South African mines, it said. He will also resume his new role on Jan. 1.
