HONOLULU, Sept. 29, 2021 - Hawaiian Electric crews will be replacing a transmission tower structure with new steel poles and relocating high-voltage transmission lines crossing the H-3 Freeway on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 2 and 3. The work, part of the utility's ongoing efforts to upgrade the electric grid infrastructure and improve system reliability in Windward Oahu, will require a daytime shutdown of the freeway in both directions over the weekend for the safety of the public and crews.

From 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days, the work will close the Kaneohe-bound lanes of H-3 Freeway after the Likelike Highway off-ramp and the Honolulu-bound lanes after the Kamehameha Highway off-ramp. Also, the Kamehameha Highway on-ramp to the H-3 Freeway and the off-ramp will be closed.

In addition to the freeway shutdown, there will be intermittent stops on Kionaole Road during the scheduled working hours.

Electronic message boards were set up to alert motorists of the planned activity. On the work days, safety signs will indicate the impending freeway closure and electronic arrowboards as well as traffic cones will mark the work zones. Flagmen and special duty police will provide onsite traffic control.

Motorists are urged to plan ahead and seek alternate routes this weekend.
