DALLAS (AP) _ HollyFrontier Corp. (HFC) on Thursday reported a third-quarter loss of $2.4 million, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier.

On a per-share basis, the Dallas-based company said it had a loss of 1 cent. Losses, adjusted for non-recurring gains, were 41 cents per share.

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of eight analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 54 cents per share.

The independent energy company posted revenue of $2.82 billion in the period, which also topped Street forecasts. Three analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $2.38 billion.

HollyFrontier shares have fallen 63% since the beginning of the year. The stock has decreased 66% in the last 12 months.
