To assist with critical blood supply shortages as a result of COVID-19, on May 5, 6 and 7, Host partnered with the American Red Cross to hold a blood drive at the Gaithersburg Marriott Washingtonian Center, a Host-owned property. While its operations are currently suspended, the hotel opened its doors to the local community by offering its unused ballroom space to host the drive.

'The blood drive was a great success and it was remarkable to see how many people came out to donate, especially during this very uncertain time,' said Kat Burns, General Manager at the hotel. 'I personally take great pride in being able to support the Red Cross by providing a host location and making a positive impact in our community.'

Throughout the three-day drive, a total of 147 donors volunteered to give blood, including 50 first-time donors. A total of 122 units of blood were collected, which could save 342 lives.

Scott Salemme, COO at the American Red Cross said, 'Blood donation is essential to ensuring the health of our communities, and volunteer donors are the only source of blood for those in need. It's important to remember that blood is perishable and cannot be stockpiled, so the need for blood is constant.'

Given the success of this event and the ongoing need for blood donations, the hotel is hosting another drive on Saturday, June 27. If you are interested in donating, please schedule an appointment.
