With a mission of helping millions of organizations grow better, HubSpot needs to grow better as a company, too. We do this by creating value for our customers and stakeholders, taking an active role in fighting racial injustice, working hard to protect customers' data and privacy, and doing what we can to reduce our impact on the environment. Together, these initiatives help us build a company that is more sustainable: one that helps sustain the employees, communities, systems, and environment we operate in.

Today, we're pleased to announce that all of the emissions from HubSpot's activities, such as employee travel and commute times, office electricity, and third party vendor emissionsare carbon neutral. We've offset our emissions from 2006, the year the company was founded, through 2020, and we intend to maintain our carbon neutral status in the future. Following Greenhouse Gas Protocolstandards, we've offset over 80,000 metric tons of emissions through the purchase of renewable energy certificates (RECs) and Verified Carbon Offsets.

In addition to our carbon neutrality pledge, HubSpot is in the process of developing an emissions reduction program, and will be measuring and reporting on its emissions on an annual basis. "The planet is in a climate crisis and we have an immense amount of work to do as a company and as a society to mitigate the impacts of climate change," said Whitney Sorenson, Chief Architect and Executive Sponsor of HubSpot's sustainability committee. "Businesses need to take responsibility for the greenhouse gas emissions they are creating. We're just getting started in our sustainability journey and I'm proud of the investment we've made for a better future by addressing our carbon footprint."

We offset our historical emissions through investments in the following nature-based and renewable energy carbon offset projects.

  • Dempsey Ridge: Wind Farm Project: The Dempsey Ridge wind project is located in western Oklahoma and sits on over 7,500 acres of agricultural and grazing land. The project has a capacity of 132 MW, consisting of 66 wind turbines.
  • Blue Creek Salmon Conservation Project: Western Rivers Conservancy (WRC), an Oregon-based non-profit conservation organization, has purchased 47,097 acres along Blue Creek in Northern California and is working to use carbon finance to transfer the forested property back to the Yurok Tribe. 14,790 acres are conserved as a "salmon sanctuary," and the other 32,307 acres are managed as a tribal "community forest" with limited sustainable harvesting.
  • Prairie Winds ND1 Emissions Reduction Project: Owned and operated by Basin Electric Power Cooperative, Prairie Winds is located near Minot, North Dakota. The project delivers enough clean energy to power 46,000 homes. Each year this renewable wind energy source avoids nearly 225,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

For 2020, we also purchased RECs and other energy attribute certificates (EACs) in every country where HubSpot has an office presence. Reducing the carbon we emit as HubSpot grows will continue to be a key focus, and we plan to offset future emissions each year and maintain our carbon neutral status.

We recognize that building a sustainable company is an ever-evolving journey. As a participant in the UN Global Compact, we have committed to adopting sustainable practices, reporting on those practices, and tracking them over time. And, in true HubSpot fashion, we'll continue to share the lessons we've learned and the steps we've taken along the wayin becoming a company future generations can be proud of.
