LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) _ Humana Inc. (HUM) on Wednesday reported second-quarter earnings of $696 million.

On a per-share basis, the Louisville, Kentucky-based company said it had profit of $5.48. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs and pretax expenses, came to $8.67 per share.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of eight analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $7.67 per share.

The health insurer posted revenue of $23.66 billion in the period, which also beat Street forecasts. Seven analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $23.39 billion.

Humana expects full-year earnings to be $24.75 per share.
