Huvis (CEO: Shin, You Dong), specializing in chemical and fiber materials, is stepping up its effortsto foster virtuous resource circulation by recycling domestic plastic wastes.
At its Jeonju Factory on August 24, Huvis signed an MOU on the promotion of a resource circulation ecosystem with the Jeollabuk-do Government, Jeollabuk-do Council for Sustainable Development, and the Korea Resource Circulation Service Agency (KORA). The MOU was conceived as a vehicle for collaboration across the provincial government, corporate community, and private sector to achieve carbon neutrality by promoting the recycling of transparent PET bottle wastes.
According to the Korean Ministry of Environment, PET bottle wastes generated in Korea are estimated to weigh about 300,000 tons per annum (as of 2018). Yet, given the constraints of the waste sorting system, about 70% of such waste is recycled into medium/low-quality staple fiber and only 10% is clean transparent PET that can be recycled into high-quality filament fiber for textile applications, etc.
To raise the recyclability of transparent PET bottles, Huvis, the Jeollabuk-do Government, Jeollabuk-do Council for Sustainable Development, and the Korea Resource Circulation Service Agency began in March to discuss collaboration strategies to promote the recycling of transparent PET bottles in the Jeonbuk region covering Jeonju, Gunsan and Iksan cities, launching programs to foster resource circulation of transparent PET bottles with a transparent PET bottle waste sorting system deployed in apartment complexes across Jeollabuk-do.
The MOU will allow Huvis to produce ECOEVER, a value-added recycled fiber, out of high-purity raw materials recycled from PET bottles collected by local governments and private entities with its high-purity recycled chip production facility placed into full operation in April. Since using recycled plastic as raw material can reduce carbon emission by approximately 40% in comparison with non-recycled plastic material, Huvis expects the MOU arrangement to contribute to achieving net-zero emissions as well as virtuous resource circulation.
Huvis has already been touted for its distinguished recycling prowess and know-how. ECOEVER was adopted for the national football team jersey in the 2010 Republic of South Africa World Cup. Dependence on raw materials recycled in Korea as opposed to imported materials can ensure stable material supply and is an effective contribution to addressing challenges posed by domestic plastic wastes.
The MOU also stipulates that the Jeollabuk-do Government develop and implement initiatives to promote the sorting and recycling of transparent PET bottles, that the Jeollabuk-do Council for Sustainable Development identify opportunities for public-private partnership projects for waste recycling promotion and greater public engagement in such projects, and that the Korea Resource Circulation Service Agency develop arrangements to facilitate the sorting of transparent PET bottles and ensure the stable supply of recyclable resources.
Director Koh, Seong-wook of Huvis Jeonju Factory confirmed, 'We will spearhead the drive for carbon neutrality by establishing a virtuous resource circulation system founded on public-private partnership in a bid to actively tackle the challenges posed by domestic plastic wastes,' and added, 'Huvis will further expand the scope of eco-friendly technology development programs to cover not just ECOEN, the biodegradable fiber successfully commercialized this year, but also other biodegradable fiber brands recycled from PET bottle wastes as a part of our ESG management focus.'
