IBM announced on Thursday that it intends to acquire Applications Software Technology, a U.S.-based provider of Oracle solutions, with a view to strengthening its presence in the government market.

Based in Lisle, Illinois, Applications Software Technology has teams in the UK, Canada and India.

Its customers are mainly local authorities and primary and secondary schools, to which it supplies - among other things - Oracle Fusion Cloud enterprise resource planning (ERP) software.

IBM, which has been working with Oracle for almost 40 years, says the acquisition - which follows on from last year's acquisition of Accelalpha - should be completed by the end of the first quarter.

Financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.
