ING Groep NV said Friday that Steven van Rijswijk has been appointed as chief executive from July 1, succeeding Ralph Hamers.

The Dutch bank said that Mr. van Rijswijk is currently a member of the board and the company's chief risk officer.

The company said the selection process for a new chief risk officer is underway and that Chief Financial Officer Tanate Phutrakul will temporarily assume the responsibility for risk on the board.

The company said Mr. Hamers will leave to join UBS, where he will become CEO later in the year.
