INPEX CORPORATION (INPEX), MITSUBISHI GAS CHEMICAL COMPANY, INC.(MGC) and Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) jointly announced they commenced joint research on the acquisition of wide-area two-dimensional seismic survey data and wide-area geological evaluation to estimate carbon dioxide (CO2) storage potential in the Kitakambara area in Niigata Prefecture, Japan.

The purpose of the joint research initiative is for INPEX, MGC and JOGMEC to jointly acquire new seismic survey data1 in addition to well and existing seismic survey data owned by INPEX and MGC. At the same time, the parties plan to evaluate subsurface CO2 storage capacity of geological formations such as the Nishiyama and Shiiya Formations that have been used as production formations of oil and gas fields in Niigata Prefecture.

A survey method that uses elastic waves generated on the surface of the earth to investigate underground structural forms and physical properties INPEX and MGC will proceed with data acquisition work for seismic surveys, and plan to carry out evaluation work together with existing data over the next fiscal year. INPEX and MGC will continue to use their technologies and capabilities related to resource development to fulfill their responsibilities of securing and providing a stable supply of energy.
