Intact Financial Corp. said Monday that the majority of its estimated catastrophe losses in the first quarter were in its U.K. and Ireland segment, and were mostly weather-related.

The Canadian insurer estimates catastrophe losses for the quarter totaled 183 million Canadian dollars, or US$145.8 million on a pretax basis, or C$0.81 a share after-tax.

About 60% of the losses were in Intact Financial's U.K. and Ireland segment, mostly due to three windstorms in February, the majority of which were losses in personal lines, the company said.

The remaining losses were in the Canadian segment, and Intact said that about 75% of those losses were attributable to personal property.
