Intel Corp. said it will provide commercial foundry services in the first phase of a U.S. Department of Defense program that aims to make circuits and commercial products required for the department's systems.

The chipmaker on Monday said its foundry services unit will partner with companies like International Business Machines Corp., Synopsys Inc., Cadence and others as part of the program, which is called Rapid Assured Microelectronics Prototypes - Commercial.

Chip-industry officials expect the shortage that has led to cuts in car production and driven up prices of some consumer electronics to ease in the coming months, with some effects likely to be felt for a long time.
