Hack.Asia 2022, an annual hackathon powered by the Jardine Matheson Group ("Jardines" or "the Group"), was held virtually from 15th January to 20th January, 2022.

The theme of Hack.Asia 2022, "Innovate the Sustainable Future", focused on finding creative technology-driven solutions and connecting innovative minds to tackle real-world sustainability cases.

Hundreds of participants across the globe worked on ten different challenge statements alongside seven sustainability themes, of which only some 60 finalists were shortlisted to compete in the virtual Hack.Asia week. The themes, identified by 12 group companies across Jardines, included automotive sustainability, decarbonisation, energy efficiency, renewable energy, social inclusion, supply chain transparency, and waste management.

Participating teams were provided with comprehensive support during their ideation processes, with behind-the-scenes access to industry leaders' speaker sharing sessions, mentoring sessions, and workshops. At the end of the week, the teams pitched their solutions to a panel of influential industry professionals, which included executives from the 12 group companies involved in setting the challenges. From there, the ten winners from each of the ten challenges presented their solutions to compete for the grand prizes.

The winners of the individual challenges for Hack.Asia 2022 were:

"Since its inception, Hack.Asia has been more than just a hackathon, it is an incubator for growth and a focal point for businesses, teams and individuals to come together to co-create solutions that can influence our tomorrow." said Anne O'Riordan, Group Director of Digital, Jardine Matheson.

The Start-up Track grand final winner team Make My Day aimed to improve the adoption of EV by utilising their B2B SaaS solutions to help simplify, optimise, and manage EV charging for drivers and fleets. The team leveraged user behaviour, data retrieved from batteries usage and charging stations to develop smart algorithms to enable the Make My Day mobile app to enhance drivers' charging experience. They also developed a comprehensive EV fleet optimisation solution that can be easily integrated with existing systems via API.

Formed by a diverse group of students from the University of Cambridge, University of Bath and University of California, Berkeley, the Student & Innovator Track grand final winner Sustaina believed preventive measures were key to curbing the food waste issue within the Food and Beverage industry. Their solution involved creating an integrated modular system composed of prediction, reservation, dynamic menu and inventory management. Using predictive analytics, this solution provided insights for restaurants to make better decisions on ordering ingredients, managing inventory, and choosing which dishes to sell. Furthermore, the programme provided customers with a dynamic menu featuring a "sustainability score" for each menu item, enabling customers to make informed decisions when ordering, as well as allowing restaurants to understand, analyse and influence their customer's behaviours.

Sharing their experience, Team Sustaina said, "We found the overall Hack.Asia experience to be incredibly rewarding. With the insights and comprehensive support provided by mentors and industry experts, we feel like we are now part of a highly diverse and wide eco-system created by Jardines."
