JGC Holdings Corporation (Representative Director, Chairman and CEO Masayuki Sato) below announces details of the technical survey relating to CO2 capture, and consolidated utilization in the industrial complex model and carbon-neutral model (hereinafter "the Survey"), which the JGC Corp. (Representative Director and President Farhan Mujib) and Japan NUS Co., Ltd. (Representative Director and President Kazuhiko Chikamoto) jointly proposed for the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO)'s CCUS R&D and Demonstration Related Project / Survey related to CCUS Technology / Technical Survey Project on CO2 Capture and Consolidated Utilization from Sources of Large CO2 Emissions, and which was selected for that project in August last year.

Under the Long-Term Strategy under the Paris Agreement as Growth Strategy, which the Cabinet approved in June 2019, Japan will aim to establish commercial-scale CCS and CCUS technology by 2023 for CCS, CCUS and carbon recycling, and will implement initiatives for realizing optimal CO2 transport from emission sources to usage and storage sites.

In the Survey, scenarios for the practical application of technologies that make it possible to apply CO2 separation and capture equipment, and utilize captured CO2 will be drawn up by selecting separation and capture technologies, and carrying out a survey on their challenges and operational feasibility through process design and other factors from August 2021 to February 2023. The Survey will cover the industrial complex model, whereby the concentration in one region of facilities such as steelworks, cement plants, oil refineries, petrochemical plants and natural gas-fired power plants, which are sources of large CO2 emissions whose curtailment is a necessity, will enable the efficient capture and consolidation of large quantities of CO2. The Survey will also make it possible to explore flexibility between facilities that connects plants within the industrial complex as well as utility facilities and offloading facilities, and the carbon negative (CO2 curtailment)* model including biomass power plants that have bee

n on the rise nationwide in recent years.

CCS and CCUS, which will contribute to reducing the burden on the environment, are being counted on as key global warming measures in the process of transitioning to a decarbonized society. The Group has positioned energy transition as a core business field in the 2040 Vision, its long-term business vision, and Building a Sustainable Planetary Infrastructure 2025, its medium-term business plan covering the five-year period from fiscal 2021. Within that, it is advocating a business expansion in the CCS/CCUS sector.

The Group has a track record of constructing CCS facilities in Algeria and Australia. Within Japan, it has a track record of building a CCS facility in Japan's first large-scale CCS pilot project in Tomakomai City, Hokkaido, and furthermore, of constructing a CO2 separation and capture facility in Hiroshima Prefecture's Osaki CoolGen Project. By capitalizing on this experience to provide broad-ranging solutions, the Group is contributing to the popularization of CCS/CCUS.

  • Carbon negative

Biomass power plants are effectively zero CO2 emitters (carbon neutral) as a result of the CO2 that has been absorbed in the process of growing the biomass they use as fuel, canceling out the CO2 that is produced when they generate power. By utilizing the CO2 emitted from carbon-neutral biomass power plants in CCS, CCU and carbon recycling, it thus becomes possible to curtail CO2 (become carbon negative).
