Transformational agreement more than quadruples in institutions, promoting open research across the country

HOBOKEN, N.J. - January 9, 2023- Wiley, one of the world's largest publishers and a global leader in research and education, today announced remarkable growth of an open access agreement in Japanby increasing from four to 18participating institutions.

Based on the success oftheinitial agreement by four Japanese institutions in 2022, a new agreementbetween Wiley and JUSTICE (Japan Alliance of University Library Consortia for E-Resources) allows 14 new universities enter into an open access agreement to start January 1, 2023. The new agreement provides reading access to Wiley's entire journal portfolio and enablesparticipating researchers to publish in Wiley's complete portfolio of nearly 2,000 hybrid and gold open access journals, including those published by Hindawi.

Professor Amane Koizumi, National Institutes of Natural Sciences, who played a pivotal role in closing the deal between the four institutions and Wiley, said, "I am delighted that 14 universities joined the transformational agreement initiated by four universities. I strongly hope that this new agreement will facilitate making research from Japan open access, resulting in further increase of global citations of such articles, as well as improvement of international reputation of Japanese universities."


The 18 participating Japanese universities include: Iwate University, Tohoku University, Saitama University, the University of Tokyo, Tokyo Institute of Technology, the University of Electro-Communications, the University of Yamanashi, Shinshu University, the Graduate University for Advanced Studies, University of Fukui, Mie University, Kyoto University, Kyushu Institute of Technology, Tokyo Metropolitan University, Keio University, Tokyo University of Science, Kanagawa University, and Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology.


Wiley's momentum in open access agreements continues to grow.Most recently, Wiley partnered with b-onin Portugal, Tulane University Librariesin the United States, and HEAL-Link in Greece to acceleratethe open access movement.
