October 28, 2014

On October 27, 2014, members from Julius Berger's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) team visited the Bishop Jimiear Grammar School in Yenagoa as part of the company's Literacy Campaign, a CSR initiative designed to help promote the advancement of literacy within the Nigerian secondary school system.

The CSR team distributed 600 Julius Berger Literacy School Backpacks to all students in JSS1-JSS3. Each literacy pack contained an Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (International Student Edition), a Julius Berger branded school notebook and Julius Berger branded pencil, eraser and sharpener.

A part of Julius Berger's CSR goals is to create educational progress through the establishment of sustainable programs and donations. Julius Berger Literacy Campaigns were launched in 2012 with the initiation of Julius Berger Book Clubs and the distribution of over 5,000 copies of the book, "The Great Fall" by Nigerian author Chinyere Obi-Obasi, to schools across Abuja, Lagos and Uyo.

The United Nations statistics list a youth literacy rate in Nigeria of 75.6% males and 58% females. The recent donation of the Literacy School Backpacks is just one component of the company's CSR educational initiatives. Others include writing workshops tailored to improve the reading culture and writing skills of participating students.
