Just Eat Takeaway.com commits to becoming Net Zero by 2030 for its direct operations

Just Eat Takeaway.com today announces that it has implemented a target for its direct operations to be Net Zero by 2030. *1

Following the combination of Just Eat and Takeaway.com last year, the business has carried out an extensive analysis of its global carbon footprint, and established that its direct and indirect carbon emissions (scopes 1-3) are 156,000 tonnes. *2

To ensure Just Eat Takeaway.com meets its 2030 target for scopes 1 & 2, the business will:

  • Improve the energy efficiency of buildings through a number of measures including the installation of LED lighting, smart controls, thermal efficiency measures and electric heating systems.
  • Switch all offices to green energy tariffs. In 2020, nearly a quarter of Just Eat Takeaway.com's facilities already had green energy tariffs in place.
  • Switch 100% of its corporate fleet to electric vehicles by 2030. Just Eat Takeaway.com already incentivises employees to make sustainable commuting and business travel choices by offering commuting allowances for public transport or monetary incentives to cycle to work.

For a business that relies on delivery, reducing related scope 3 emissions is also a major focus. Due to Just Eat Takeaway.com's large scale business growth and the complexities associated with its delivery logistics network, the business is still working hard to identify opportunities to reduce its scope 3 emissions and will subsequently be setting a credible and achievable target.

Just Eat Takeaway.com has already made progress in driving forward the use of electric vehicles across its network. Tens of thousands of couriers have access to Just Eat Takeaway.com's fleet of e-bikes, e-scooters and bikes through its own delivery network, Scoober. In certain jurisdictions, couriers can also take part in lease schemes of e-bikes, e-scooters, and bikes. Alongside this, the business is supporting partner restaurants to deliver sustainably. For example, since 2017, the business has sold thousands of competitively priced e-bikes to our restaurant partners in a number of its markets.

As one of the leading food delivery companies, the business is committed to supporting the wider sector and, as such, it has also expanded its carbon assessment to estimate farm-to-fork carbon emissions.

Just Eat Takeaway.com intends to use its position as a market leader to continue to push forward measures to encourage and support the wider industry to operate more sustainably. This includes trialling a number of different sustainable packaging initiatives, which the business hopes to scale across its network, such as seaweed-based compostable packaging and reusable packaging schemes.

At Just Eat Takeaway.com, we believe that being a good business matters just as much as doing good business. As our operations continue to grow, we want to ensure we're doing what we can to drive sustainable behaviour through the food delivery sector. Whilst we're pleased with the progress we've already made, we understand the importance of taking greater action to tackle climate change. Our commitment to become net zero in our own operations by 2030 is only the beginning.Jitse Groen, CEO of Just Eat Takeaway.com

Just Eat Takeaway.com has also published its responsible business update, focusing both on the impacts of our direct operations, as well as our ambition to influence our wider network towards positive change under 3 key pillars: Planet, Food, People and Society.
