November 29,2021

KDDI CORPORATION and OKINAWA CELLULAR TELEPHONE COMPANY will terminate the au 3G mobile phone service CDMA 1X WIN on 31 March, 2022.
Accordingly, mobile phone handset models compatible with CDMA 1X WIN, those not compatible with the au VoLTE high-quality voice call audio service, as well as services for UQ mobile SIM cards not compatible with VoLTE, will no longer be operable from April 1, 2022 onward [1].

■Background

CDMA 1X WIN service became available in November 2003, while sales of au VoLTE non-compatible phone models began in September 2012. But the number of these users has now diminished amid the increasingly widespread use of the 5G and 4G LTE mobile phone services offering high-speed data transmission capability and the au VoLTE service offering high-quality audio for voice calls.
Another reason for discontinuing the CDMA 1X WIN service is that it will free up the relevant frequency bandwidth sectors so that we can use their capacity to further ensure our customers future comfort and convenience in using au mobile and UQ mobile phone services.

■Actions for affected customers

Because of these changes, it will be necessary for customers currently using handset models compatible with CDMA 1X WIN, SIM cards not compatible with VoLTE, or handsets not compatible with au VoLTE to switch to 5G or 4G LTE handsets that are compatible with VoLTE. Affected customers will be able to carry out the relevant procedures free of charge, and customers using CDMA 1X WIN can utilize a service for replacing some handsets free of charge.

If affected customers do not change their handset by March 31, 2022, their mobile phone contract may be canceled or temporarily suspended on April 1, 2022. No contract cancellation fees or other administrative fees will be incurred for canceling the contract, and no monthly usage fees or other fees will be incurred from April 1, 2022 onward.

By providing more convenient communication services, KDDI and OKINAWA CELLULAR are continually working to increase the value of our customers experience.

See attached reference materials for details.

Customers' mobile phone numbers and other information will be stored temporarily after the contract is automatically canceled, but storage of this information will end on June 30, 2022.
On April 1, 2022, customers using 4G LTE-compatible models not compatible with au VoLTE will automatically have their services temporarily suspended, whereby no basic fees or other monthly usage fees will be incurred, and mobile phone numbers and other information will be stored temporarily.
