Kingspan Shaped Solutions has partnered with Groenlandia Tech on a ground-breaking cold chain product set to revolutionise healthcare logistics. The Nuuk smart cooler has been specifically designed to allow critical items, such as vaccines, drugs and biological samples, to be transported safely and securely. Its expanded polypropylene (EPP) container is packed with the latest technology, allowing customers to monitor the location and condition of packages in real-time, preventing damage or loss.
Groenlandia Tech has carried out research and development on the Nuuk with funding from Mutter Ventures and an Enisa loan. The smart cooler has a range of features including a GPS tracker, impact and temperature sensors and an RFID opening control system to prevent unauthorised access. This hardware is tied together through a software platform which allows stakeholders to easily access up-to-date information about the container through a dedicated portal.
Through our deal with Groenlandia Tech, Kingspan has obtained exclusive worldwide rights to manufacture the EPP Nuuk containers, which may also serve as a vaccine cooler for transportation. Our experienced team collaborated closely with the Groelandia technicians, developing the initial prototypes into a container design which can be manufactured at scale. The EPP material not only provides a highly insulated and robust protective shell around the sensitive contents, but is also used to produce the hinges and, in collaboration with EJOT, the internal inserts. The material can be fully recycled at end of life and is manufactured with a raw material ARPRO from JSP which features 25% recyclate, supporting improved circularity.
Following the successful testing of 12 pilot units, production will begin in July 2021 on the first run of 500 containers at our Montcada facility near Barcelona.
Xavier Rigau, Managing Director at Kingspan Shaped Solutions, commented:
'Nuuk has the potential to transform healthcare logistics, providing improved traceability and greater assurance that materials will reach the end user in the expected condition. The project demonstrates how we can work with clients to develop bespoke EPP or expanded polystyrene (EPS) solutions which meet their exacting requirements. We are excited to begin full production on these units and look forward to collaborating with Groenlandia Tech on further projects in the future.'
Gabriel Bestard-Ribas, CEO at Groenlandia Tech commented: 'Partnering with Kingspan Shaped Solutions is pivotal to achieving our vision of transforming healthcare logistics worldwide. We are looking forward to working with Kingspan as our worldwide manufacturing partner, leveraging their production capabilities around the globe. At Groenlandia Tech we aim to provide global products with local production and service'.
