KT&G : Signs an MOU to Protect Marine Ecosystems

KT&G (CEO Baek Bok-in) signed a business agreement with the Korea Maritime Environment Corporation and the East Asia Sea Community Ocean, a civic organization, at the KT&G Seoul office building on the 17th to protect marine ecosystems.

Lee Sang-hak, Vice President of KT&G's Sustainable Management Division, Yoo Sang-jun, head of the Marine Conservation Division of the Korea Maritime Environment Corporation, and Hong Sun-wook, head of the East Asia Sea Community Ocean, attended the signing ceremony.

The agreement focuses on restoring marine biodiversity and protecting marine ecosystems. To this end, the signers plan to conduct joint research and restoration activities on areas with severe pollution and to conduct campaigns to raise awareness on the issue.

The signers will investigate marine waste and biological damage in Busan and Gyeongsangnam-do by the end of this year and carry out collection activities of beach and underwater waste 14 times in total. In particular, the signers plan to increase the effectiveness of cleanup activities by selecting key collection items for each instance.

In order to raise awareness on the issue of the destruction of marine ecosystems, an exhibition will also be held at the Busan KT&G Sangsang Madang during the second half of this year.

Lee Sang-hak, Vice President of KT&G's Sustainable Management Division said, 'We are pleased to work with public institutions and civic groups to protect the marine ecosystem. KT&G will continue to take the lead in eco-friendly management through various activities, such as environmental improvement campaigns.'

Meanwhile, KT&G is also carrying out the 'Ssudam Ssudam' campaign to reduce cigarette butts thrown away on the streets. 'Ssudam Ssudam' is a catchy expression for 'throw cigarette butts in trash cans.' It was designed to convey a message of environmental protection and improve street cleanliness by preventing littering.
