InSecTT: the secure merger of IoT and Artificial Intelligence

Leonardo, partner of the European InSecTT project, contributes to the development of innovative solutions for urban mobility and infrastructure monitoring

Leonardo is among the partners of InSecTT (Intelligent Secure Trustable Things), a European research project funded by the ECSEL (Electronics Components and Systems for European Leadership) Joint Undertaking and coordinated by Virtual Vehicle (Austria). The aim is to develop intelligent, secure, trustable solutions for European industry across the supply chain, by bringing together the Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence.

Leonardo's expertise in the use of AI for security and monitoring purposes as well as in electronics will contribute to the development of solutions for smart city public transportation and secure passenger flows in airports, as well as in the monitoring and protection of marine infrastructure.

The expansion of connected devices and sensors, also known as the Internet of Things, has increased the availability of interconnected systems and data, with a number of advantages in different sectors ranging from manufacturing to critical infrastructure, transportation, automotive and healthcare.

The availability of this huge amount of data is proceeding at the same pace as the development of new Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms, making possible new applications such as automatic recognition, based on massive data analysis. The other side of the coin is the vulnerability of these devices in terms of security, reducing confidence in such technologies.

Solving these issues is one the keys to unlocking the benefits of IoT applications and is in line with the objectives being pursued by the EU.

In order to improve both security and performance in IoT applications, the approach is to move AI to the edge, i.e. processing data locally on a hardware device closer to the sources that generate them. With edge computing, local intelligent processing moves AI from the centre of the network (cloud) to the edge, without moving data in the cloud.

InSecTT
Within this context, InSecTT brings together 52 partners from 12 different countries (Europe and Turkey), with the main objectives to develop smart, secure and trustable systems, building trust in systems and solutions and growing the potential of the 'Artificial Intelligence of Things'.

As a consortium partner, Leonardo leads the use cases for the security of public transportation and airports. The company also contributes to a use case for the monitoring of marine and port infrastructure.

The first use case, led by Leonardo alongside Eurotech, CINI and SETA (Società Emiliana di Trasporti Autofiloviari), deals with the development of three security solutions based on AI applications for public transportation in urban environments:

  • Systems for audio and video anomaly detection, based on AI to increase passenger safety and security
  • A predictive algorithm to verify the status of vehicles using data from monitoring of mechanical components via devices installed on board (predictive maintenance)
  • Systems to detect road defects, passenger flow analysis and air quality on board vehicles to enhance safety and security

The second use case, carried out by Leonardo with Eurotech, CINI e Aeroporti di Puglia focuses on airport security. In this case, the main objective is monitoring airports through four experimental solutions:

  • A new system for passenger recognition to speed up boarding and disembarkation procedures
  • Monitoring of the terminal area using techniques such as computer vision, audio pattern recognition and systems to detect potentially dangerous substances
  • Solutions to detect and track suspicious individuals who might intend to bring dangerous goods into the airport
  • Experimental monitoring systems to check the most vulnerable points in the airport

The third use case aims to develop IoT solutions for the port and marine environment, providing innovative services for the secure management of commercial and tourist activities. Leonardo's contribution deals with access control and monitoring of the subsea areas around critical infrastructure, through acoustic and magnetic sensors networks distributed on the seabed to track underwater threats.
